The Waldron Story...Continued
Memories of WHS Basketball
Victory Bell Conceived in 1939 by Waldron High School teacher, Maurice Trotter, the Victory Bell has come to symbolize the intense basketball rivalries that exist between Shelby County Schools. The bell is a traveling trophy that changes hands when one of the four Shelby County schools beats the team that possesses it. The original bell was retired in 2000 because it became too heavy with the huge collection of leather straps representing the individual exchanges from school to school. The original bell now resides in the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in New Castle, Indiana.

2004 IHSAA State Class A Championship Team
In 1926-27, Waldron’s basketball team played in the state tournament at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis but lost in one of the championship games. As the story goes, the bus driver got lost on the way to Hinkle. (There is a whole other story about this team).

In 2004 the Mighty Mohawks again made their way to the state tourney where they used a big run to end the first period and ran away for a 69-54 victory over Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian in the IHSAA Class A state championship game at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
Following this event, the community realized there was no banner hanging in the gym to recognize the 1926-27 team, the school had one made. Locals living in the community who were graduates of that period were invited to the presentation of the banner.
In 2013 a WHS basketball reunion was held with the following coaches in attendance; Jason Gorrell, Larry Skinner, Jason Delany, Kendall Wildey, Steve Cox, Bill Doig, Hank West, Larry Phares, Jeff Gorrell, and Dave Omer.
